About Pyrenean Mastiffs of the Northwoods

Our family lives in rural Northeastern Minnesota where we are surrounded by forests and lakes and rivers. We wanted large, winter-loving dogs as companions and guardians for our family. We researched many different large dog breeds before discovering the Pyrenean Mastiff. The breed checked all the boxes and matched perfectly for our family: They were calm, gentle, protective, large, thrived in cold weather, and had health and longevity. In 2019, we imported Cali (Ulzama de Saigola) and Lena (Adalena Serra do Barbanza) from Spain.

Our Approach

At Pyrenean Mastiffs of the Northwoods, we are dedicated to responsible breeding and the promotion of the rare Pyrenean Mastiff breed. We focus on genetic diversity, temperament, and structure to ensure that our puppies are healthy, happy, and confident. Our puppies are raised in our home with access to the yard and exposed to various stimuli to prepare them for their new homes. We provide AKC registration, a microchip, vet records, and a puppy bundle to all new puppy owners.

Why We Breed

We chose Cali and Lena with the intention of potentially breeding in the future. We saw how special this breed truly is and wanted to give other dog-lovers the chance to own one of these remarkable dogs. We also knew how rare the Pyrenean Mastiff is, and wanted to do our part in promoting the breed. We dedicated ourselves to breeding the right way. We armed ourselves with books, DVDs, and smart friends from the breeding world. We joined Facebook groups, spent hours researching on the internet, took several classes in genetics and hip and elbow dysplasia in canines. Three years later, we welcomed our first litter!
